DECEMBER ONGOING

Dec. 1 − 15, archival exhibit: Historical images and documents are on display at the public archives to mark the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution and the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence. Location is the Sala de Consulta at Archivo Histórico Pablo L. Martínez, next to Teatro de la Ciudad, Navarro and Héroes de Independencia. Hours are Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Dec. 1 − 28, museum exhibition: an exhibition of photographs and objects recovered from historic village sites in Baja California Sur is at the city’s anthropology museum, Museo Regional de Antropología e Historia de Baja California Sur, open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Dec. 1 − 31, photography exhibition: Paisaje Urbano y Personajes de La Paz (urban scenery and personalities of La Paz) is the title of this exhibition at Marina Costa Baja. Admission is free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays

Dec. 1 − Jan. 8, traditional nativity scene: The nativity scene is on display at the Plaza de la Reforma at the Palacio de Gobierno, (the Governor’s Palace) on Isobel la Católica between Bravo and Rosales, across the street from the parking lot of Chedraui.

Dec. 1 − Jan. 31, photography exhibition: archival photographs of 100 years of Sudcalifornia are on display in the esplanade of Unidad Cultural Profr. Jesús Castro Agúndez, on the grounds of Teatro de la Ciudad.

DECEMBER DAY BY DAY

Wednesday, Dec. 1

Festival de Gala de Otoño: The Asociación de Maestros de Danza (association of dance instructors) presents this performance, coordinated by Monthiel Uribe, at 7 p.m. at Teatro de la Ciudad. Admission is 50 pesos.

Thursday, Dec. 2

Musical recital: The grupo interdisciplinario of the Escuela de Música del Estado perform at 7 p.m. at the Pueblo Marinero of Marina Costa Baja. Admission is free.

Urban ballet festival: Compañia Monster Dance Centre with dance academies RDA, Studio Jazz, Ballance & Monster and special guest Neutral Zone perform at 8 p.m. at Teatro de la Ciudad. Admission is 85 pesos.

Roundtable discussion: The topic is film and the 200th anniversary of independence. Participants are Rubén Olachea, Fabiola Jasmin Rodriguez and Gabriel Camacho. It’s at 8:30 p.m. at Alianza Francesa’s cultural centre. Admission is free. This event is the kickoff for a film course that starts Dec. 3
Live music: Gera Meza performs contemporary songs starting 9 p.m. at Bar Salsipuedes. The admission of 35 pesos includes a beer.


Friday, Dec. 3

Concert: The symphony orchestra of la Escuela de Música del Estado performs under the direction of Luis Peláez García at 8 p.m. at the Sala de Conciertos La Paz. Admission is 100 pesos. It’s a benefit for the Socorrito Dining Room, which prepares and delivers warm meals to seniors who can no longer cook for themselves. An early release lists works by Strauss, Moncayo, Mummel, Bach, Bruce Chase and Suppé. There is also a performance Dec. 4.

Christmas carol competition:  The concurso de Villancicos begins at 6 p.m. at Casa de la Cultura del Estado. Admission is free.

 
Photography show opens: A show of photographs by Tina Modotti opens at the Centro Estatal de Artes, Tradiciones y Culturas Populares de Baja California Sur. The opening is at 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. (sources give different times).  Admission is free. The show continues until Jan. 31.

Saturday, Dec. 4

Concert: The symphony orchestra of la Escuela de Música del Estado performs under the direction of Luis Peláez García at 7 p.m. at the Sala de Conciertos La Paz. An early release lists works by Strauss, Moncayo, Mummel, Bach, Bruce Chase and Suppé. Admission is 50 pesos. Call 122-4331 for tickets and more information.

Sunday, Dec. 5

Malecón en Familia: There will be family entertainment from  9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the kiosk of the Malecón (the foot of 16 de Septiembre).

FANLAP Subasta 2010: The annual auction to benefit children who live in marginalized areas of La Paz will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Marina de La Paz. Club Cruceros de La Paz is a sponsor of the event, which is coordinated by Fundación Ayuda Niños La Paz. Funds raised support school meal programs, scholarships for tuition, school supplies, uniforms and a public library where students can do homework and access the Internet. The organizers accept donations of items for boats, homes, clothing and other “treasures.” Don’t wait until the last minute -- bring donations before this date to the Marina de La Paz office, Legaspy and Topete, during office hours.

 
El Rosario art festival cancelled: This event, which had been scheduled for Dec. 5, has been cancelled.

Weekly organic market opens: The plan is to hold a market every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting this Tuesday, at Caprichos restaurant on Madero Street between 5 de Mayo and Constitución. On the list of foods: organic greens from Pescadero, regional cheese from Todos Santos, organic products from Sabores de México, bread from Pan d’Les and pastries from chef Carlos. Other producers are welcome to participate. For information, call 612-142-0725.

La Paz book group: The group gets together at 2 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the home of one of its members. Everyone is welcome. If you are interested in doing a book gift exhange, please bring a wrapped book to exchange. This month’s book for discussion: The Zookeeper’s Wife. “Baja All-Exclusive” documentary: This is a free showing of the 50-minute documentary Baja All-Exclusive: La otra cara de los desarrollos turísticos en Sudcalifornia (the other face of tourist developments in Sudcalifornia). It’s at 8 p.m. in Teatro de La Ciudad de La Paz. The documentary makers, 7Filos Producciones, want the public to reflect on the cultural and natural values that distinguish Baja California Sur from other tourist destinations in the country and to consider the impact of future development of the region. Concert: Quichu Isais and Vicente Cardoza perform works by Frédéric Chopin in concert at 7 p.m. at the Sala de Conciertos La Paz. Admission is 50 pesos. Contact the music school for tickets and more information.

In Todos Santos, Bluz Explozion: Singer and guitarist Sheft-hat Khnemu and his group Bluz Explozion perform starting 8 p.m. at Hotel California.

LOOKING AHEAD

Feb. 27, 2011, tour of historic houses in Todos Santos: This is the 17th year for the tour. All proceeds go directly to support the educational and medical programs for children, so the organizers are asking sponsors, volunteers and attendees to mark their calendars to reserve that weekend. March 3, 2011,
