Expect to hear mainly Spanish spoken at most of these events. Go to the Venues page for information on event locations. Until Aug. 10, art show: An exhibition of work by Peruvian artist Jaime Romero is at the Centro de Artes, Tradiciones y Cultural Populares de BCS (the former governor’s house on Madero Street across from the Jardín Velasco). The title of the show is Litaniae Sanctorum (litany of the saints).
Until Aug. 15, sculpture show: Work by Homero Marínez Chairez is on exhibit in the lobby of Teatro de La Ciudad. Admission is free.
Until Aug. 31, folk art show extended: The Mexican folk art exhibition, Manos maestras de un pueblo, continues at the Centro de Estatal de Artes, Tradiciones y Culturas Populares de BCS, on Calle Madero between Independencia and 5 de Mayo, across the street from Jardín Velasco. This collection of the Parra family is on show at the centre, which is open 9:00 to 20:00 Monday through Friday and 9:00 to 18:00 Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.
Until Aug. 31, architecture exhibition: A display focusing on domestic architecture and urban scenery of the port of La Paz, which opened June 5, continues in the patio of Centro Cutural La Paz, 16 de Septiembre and Belisario Dominguez. Admission is free. The show is coordinated by Archivo histórico Pablo L. Martínez.
Opened July 27, art show: Arquetipos Sudcalifornianos (BCS archetypes), an exhibition of work by Daniel Amora, is in the hallways of Palacio Municipal de La Paz (cityhall), Carabineros and Av. de Los Deportistas. No information provided on closing date for this exhibition.
Opened Aug. 1, art show: Flores, Paisajes y Desnudos is a show of work by Mexican artist Lucille Wong. The exhibition is in the Centro Cultural La Paz, 16 de Septiembre and Belisario Dominguez. Admission is free. No information provided on closing date for this exhibition.
Opened Aug. 4, visual artists exhibition: The show De lo popular a lo contemporáneo (from the popular to the contemporary) is open to the public at the Centro de Artes, Tradiciones y Culturas Populares de BCS, Madero between 5 de Mayo and Independencia across from Jardín Velasco. Participants: Norman Bardavid Nissm, Humberto Carrasco Velázquez, Antonio Luis Castellanos Basich, Mario Castro Gómez, Rafael Alejandro Cauduro Alcántara, Víctor Cauduro Rojas, David Leonardo Chávez Castañeda, Fidel Corpus Nava, Alejandro Fuentes Gil, Luis Nishizawa Flores, Marcelino Fernando Olivera Acevedo, Miguel Ángel Suárez Ruiz and invited artist Carlos César Diaz Castro. No closing date is listed for the exhibition.
August through October, Mexico Encantado road trip: Mexico Encantado(enchanting Mexico) is a documentary series that is the project of artists Lila Magallón and Rose Robin. They are scheduled to leave La Paz Aug. 16 on a 7,525-kilometer road trip, travelling in a motor home through Mexico to give free art workshops and promote tourism. Continuing, movie theatres in La Paz: There are now three multiplex movie theatres in the city: Cinépolis La Paz (in the original Soriana shopping centre), Cinépolis Paseo La Paz (near the new Soriana) and Cinemex (in the Mega shopping centre). History on display: Extranjeros en el Districto Sur de la Baja California (foreigners in BCS) is the title of this exhibit in the lobby of the Archivo Histórico (the archives), which is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Cultural event for families: La cultura es contigo (culture is with you) features music, dance and theatre. Nov. 17, East Cape Music Festival in Los Barriles: It will start on Saturday afternoon at the Los Palmas de Cortez and rock into the evening. This is a benefit concert for the local Asociación de Artes del Marde Cortez A.C. to promote the love of art and music in the schools in the East Cape. Originally set for Nov. 18, the dates has been changed to Nov. 17.
Dec. 2, Subasta charity event: The date has been set for the annual charity auction, and donations of clothing and household goods are being accepted. The purpose of the auction is to raise funds to support Fundación Ayuda Niños La Paz, A.C.. You may bring your donations to the Marina de La Paz at Legaspy and Topete. The proceeds of the auction are used for a lunch program for children of an impoverished area, and scholarships for junior and senior high school. It’s one of several activities at AbraPalabra, a non-profit children’s library on the grounds of the Galería Galería art gallery on Revolución at the corner of Juárez. Live music - Groove Azul, Fridays: Groove Azul plays a fusion of styles, including jazz, blues, funk and Latin rhythms. It’s a duo featuring guitarist Dario Norzagaray and saxophonist and singer Leo Dann. You’ve probably heard their beautiful music as they play in other groups around La Paz. Groove Azul plays from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at La Esquina bar, Independencia 201 on the corner of Belisario Dominguez.

Live music - NuJazz, Saturdays: The duo NuJazz performs at 8 p.m. at La Encantada gallery and wine bar, 1245 Belisario Dominguez between 5 de Mayo and Constitución. Darío Norzagaray plays guitar and James Wilson plays sax, synthesizer and keyboards. Their repertoire includes tasteful and familiar jazz standards, upbeat Latin rhythms, and a number of original compositions written by Nu Jazz members.
Live music - piano, Sundays: KB Morrissey plays Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during brunch at Palermo's Ristorante, on the Malecón between Hidalgo and Morelos Streets. KB has been called the most versatile pianist in La Paz: she covers jazz, ragtime, classical, ballads, and blues. You're sure to hear a favorite or two.
Music school - public rehearsals, Tuesdays and Fridays: Rehearsals of the Orquesta Juvenil de la Escuela de Música del Estado, 1055 Morelos on the corner of Marcelo Rubio, are free and open to the public at Sala de Conciertos La Paz. Public rehearsals are from 18:00 to 20:30 Tuesdays and from 17:00 to 20:00 Fridays. You may wish to double-check with the school that there’s a rehearsal on a particular evening.
