EVENTS 2012








APRIL-MAY 2012: This is a calendar of arts and cultural events in La Paz, México. Schedules can change, so if your heart is set on a particular event, best to double-check place and time. Expect to hear mainly Spanish spoken at most of these events. Go to the Venues page for information on event locations. And at the bottom of the Venues page, there’s list of useful links to other English-language sites for more information about La Paz and Baja California Sur. I welcome your input. CONTINUING

Until May 15, art show: U.S. artist Jill Casty’s exhibition of her glass art is at La Encantada gallery, Belisario Dominguez between 5 de Mayo and Constitución. A description from her website: Her work has been called “painterly” —  working in both America and Italy, she uses glass fusions as a painter uses a brush to create layered rhythms, textures, flowing fields and discrete shapes of color, brilliant or lyrically subdued, color that changes its tones and moods in the play of changing light.” The pieces are wall-hanging sculptures of fused glass and metal. Continuing, poster exhibition: “Cine Mexicano de ayer,” an exhibition of posters, opened May 3 at Alianza Francesa de La Paz. Admission is free. No closing date is listed for the show. The centre is on Revolución 635 between Morelos and Guadalupe Victoria. It’s open Monday through Friday 5-9 pm; Sat 9:30 am-2 pm. Phone number: 122-28-88.

Continuing, photography show: This exhibition of beautiful photographs by Miguel Ángel de la Cueva has been on show for the past few months in the Centro de Artes, Tradiciones y Culturas Populares (the historic building facing Jardín Velazco on Madero between Independencia and 5 de Mayo). Closing date is not listed; catch it while you can. Ángel de la Cueva is a nature and conservation photographer. Continuing, classes and workshops: Courses continue this month at Centro Cultural La Paz (tango, aerial dance and salsa) and at Casa Parra (making jewelry with seeds). Other classes have started at Casa de Cultura del Estado, Casa de Cultura Municipal, the Instituto Technológico de La Paz, IMSS and the Universidad Mundial. See details on the Classes page. Continuing, exhibition of photography and video: The collective exhibitionHombre, Naturaleza y Cultura (man, nature and culture) in the CÓDEX Península salon of the Centro Cultural La Paz is a permanent photography show that highlights the special characteristics that make up the cultural identity of Baja California Sur. A video showcasing BCS complements the photographs. Photographers are Elizabeth Moreno Damm, Enrique Hambleton, Alejandro Rivas Sánchez, Carlos Navarro Serment, Carlos Aguilera Calderón, Miguel Ángel de la Cueva and Fernando Sánchez Bernal. Text is in English and Spanish. Admission is free.

Continuing, movie theatres in La Paz: There are now three multiplex movie theatres in the city: Cinépolis La Paz (in the original Soriana shopping centre), Cinépolis Paseo La Paz (near the new Soriana) and Cinemex (in the Mega shopping centre). Continuing, youth painting project: Artist Rose Robin, who been painting murals with young people at the north end of the Malecón, is expanding her “Painting Pirates Club” project. La Paz founding festival through May 6 (events in magenta): The annualFiestas Culturales de Fundación de La Paz May 2-6 features a great mix of artists and cultural programs to celebrate the history of the region. Artisans’ exhibition and sale begins: Jardín Velasco is the site of this three-day cultural event May 4, 5 and 6 from 17:30 to 22:00. The event is sponsored by the festivals office of Cultural Department of the Municipality of La Paz. The majority of tents will be on Independencia between Belisario Dominguez and Revolución and on Madero between Independencia and 5 of Mayo.

Flamenco dance performance: Zambra y Claudio present arte flamenco de Aguascalientes at 19:00 at Teatro Juárez, Belisario Dominguez between 16 de Septiembre and Independencia. This event is part of Fiestas Culturales de Fundación de La Paz.

Blúz Explozión: Sheft-hat Khnemu Ra and his group fill in this week for Laura and the Baja Boys from 7 to 11 p.m. at Tailhunter’s Bar and Restaurant, Obregón 755 (on the Malecón between Salvatierra and Iglesia). 

Salsa workshops begin: A new series of workshops for beginners starts at Centro Cultural La Paz, 16 de Septiembre near the corner of Belisario Dominguez. Classes with Agatino Rapisarda will be Tuesdays and Fridays, 20:00 to 22:00. For more information, call 612-157-7674.

Groove Azul performs: Groove Azul plays a fusion of styles, including jazz, blues, funk and Latin rhythms. It’s a duo featuring guitarist Dario Norzagaray and saxophonist and singer Leo Dann. You’ve probably heard their beautiful music as they play in other groups around La Paz. Groove Azul begins weekly Friday performances tonight from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at La Esquina bar, Independencia 201 on the corner of Belisario Dominguez.

In Loreto, Loreto Fest begins: The festival for the cruising fleet and landlubbers returns to Puerto Escondido May 4, 5 and 6. There will be dinghy races, a dinghy parade, a bay clean-up on Friday, swap meet on Saturday and lots of live music. SATURDAY, MAY 5

Cinco de Mayo: This Mexican holiday celebrates the defeat of the French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1861, but it is not a national holiday.

Children’s workshop: AbraPalabra is a non-profit children’s library on the grounds of the Galería Galería art gallery on Revolución at the corner of Juárez. The "Library workshop” from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday offers stories and crafts and the cost, including materials and light refreshments, is 80 pesos. This week, kids make gifts for Mother’s Day. The library has books in English, Spanish and French for newborns to children aged 12. Gala de Habaneras: Members of the Marina Mercante de México and the Banda de Música del Gobierno del Estado perform at 19:00 at Teatro Juárez, Belisario Dominguez between 16 de Septiembre and Independencia.

Folkloric dance performance: Mitote Folklórico performs at 19:30 at Centro Cultural La Paz, 16 de Septiembre near the corner of Belisario Dominguez. This event is part of Fiestas Culturales de Fundación de La Paz.

Jazz-flamenco performance: Hernán Romero performs at 21:00 at Jardín Velasco, 5 de Mayo between Madero and Revolución. A virtuoso guitarist, singer, and composer, his music is a fusion of flamenco-gypsy and classical jazz and Latin rhythms. He has worked with some of world’s finest guitarists, including Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin. Visit his website to learn more and to sample his music at www.hernanromero.com. Lunada: A monthly program that brings together literature, music and theatre begins at 20:00 at Casa de La Cultura. Admission is free.

Recital for voice and pianoLas Mujeres en la Música (women in music) is the title of this performance by soprano Loyda Vázquez and pianist Cruz de la Paz Garcia at 19:00 at Teatro Juárez. Admission is free. The program is sponsored by the founding festival and the school of music. For information, call 122-2286.

Baritone and mariachi performance: Baritone Alejandro Lazzarini performs with mariachi musicians at 21:00 at Jardín Velasco, 5 de Mayo between Madero and Revolución. This free event is part of Fiestas Culturales de Fundación de La Paz.

NSM PSM performs: They’re techno music DJs described this way online: “No Somos Machos Pero Somos Muchos or Non Stop Music Play Some Music are probably the coolest hosts for parties in Mexico City. The crowded city feels vibrant whenever they have a gig; their events turn out as a big encounter of hipsters, art, color and electrodance.” The duo performs at 22:00 at Centro Cultural La Paz, 16 de Septiembre near the corner of Belisario Dominguez. Musical recitalUn canto a las mamás (a song for mothers) is the title of this day-before-Mother’s-Day choral performance at 18:00 at the school of music’s Sala de Conciertos La Paz. The recital is directed by Loyda Vázquez, Omar Ramirez and Pedro Peláez Morales and participants are the academic chorus of the school of music, Blancas Piccolo and Coro Temedéhua. June 16-17, Expo Tattoo: The second annual tattoo festival in La Paz features entertainment, live music, and, of course, tattoo artists and everything related to tattoos. Tickets will be available through the Rock Shop KM 64 on Belisario Dominguez at the corner of 5 de Mayo. For more information, call 612-122-3339.

July 5-7, marine show in Cabo San Lucas: The third annual Cabo Marine Show, which is at IGY Marina Cabo San Lucas docks K through M, will host more than 50 local and foreign vendors. The general public is welcome. For more information, e-mail info@maaseventos.com

Nov. 18, East Cape Music Festival in Los Barriles: It will start on Sunday afternoon at the Los Palmas de Cortez and rock into the evening. This is a benefit concert for the local Asociación de Artes del Marde Cortez A.C. to promote the love of art and music in the schools in the East Cape.

Cultural presentation - Se Habla La Paz language school, Tuesdays: The language school presents a cultural talk in simple Spanish Tuesdays from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Handouts are included. Unless otherwise noted, presentations are at the school. This year, Se Habla is also offering some fieldtrips. Presentations are open to the public and are free. Walk-ins are welcome. Farmers’ market at CostaBaja, every second Sunday: Marina CostaBaja hosts a Mercado Orgánico y de Artesanías (organic market and crafts fair) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every second Sunday.

Farmers’ market at the postal park, Tuesdays and Saturdays: Location is the park on the corner of Constitución and Revolución across from the post office and Corazón Café. Watch for a possible change later in May for the Tuesday market, which may move to a smaller, shaded venue for the summer. There are no plans to switch location for the Saturday market. Selling officially gets underway at 9:30 a.m. You’ll find fresh greens and seasonal offerings, organic eggs, jams, sauces, German sausages and baked goods, including Sharon's goodies and Pan D'Les artisan breads. There are also handicrafts, works of art and, say the organizers, “items for mind, body and spirit.” Shoppers are asked to bring small change when making purchases and to take along a tote bag or cooler. You may find more vendors on Saturdays than Tuesdays. (updated April 24) 

Film - Painting Pirates’ movie night in the arroyo, Wednesdays: The Painting Pirates club presents features and documentaries Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m. in the arroyo at Betty's sea food restaurant, which is the last house on the arroyo before the bridge with the windmill. Admission is free. The Painting Pirates club is a youth painting project of artist Rose Robin. For more information, contact her atrose@roserobinart.com or paintingpirates@gmail.com. Film - Salsipuedes movie series, Tuesdays: Salsipuedes bar and restaurant on the Malecón (Obregón 2130 between Allende and Juárez) shows movies most Tuesday nights at about 8:30 p.m. on its patio. Many of the films are prize-winners or recent releases, and there’s no cover charge. For more information, visit Bar Salsipuedes on Facebook or drop by the bar.

Live music - Baja South Band, Thursdays: Fernando, Alfonso and the guys play classic rock Thursdays 6:30-10 p.m. at Pelicanos restaurant at about Kilometer 14 in El Centenario. Live music - Café Corazón, Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays: boleros and romantic ballads with Trío Los Caporales Mondays; romantic music with Daniel y Andrea Wednesdays; Latin rhythms, trova and original compositions with Demián Arcadia Thursdays; Grupo Eva Wendy y Olaf Saturdays. Music starts at 20:30 (except for Saturdays, 21:00) at Corazón on Revolución at the corner of Constitución. There is no cover charge.

Live music - Groove Azul, Fridays: Groove Azul plays a fusion of styles, including jazz, blues, funk and Latin rhythms. It’s a duo featuring guitarist Dario Norzagaray and saxophonist and singer Leo Dann. You’ve probably heard their beautiful music as they play in other groups around La Paz. Groove Azul plays from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at La Esquina bar, Independencia 201 on the corner of Belisario Dominguez.

Live music - Johnny Angel Band, Wednesdays and Saturdays: Band members are Angel, Rego, Johnnie the drummer, Pepe and Blue.  They play classic rock ’n’ roll and blues from 1830 until 2200 Wednesdays and Saturdays at Club Marlin in El Centenario at km 14. 

Live music - Laura and the Baja Boys, Wednesdays and Fridays: This rollickin’ and tuneful rock-and-roll band plays from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays at La Costa Restaurant, at Rangel and Navarro near Marina de La Paz. On Fridays, the band plays from 7 to 11 p.m. at Tailhunter’s Bar and Restaurant, Obregón 755 (on the Malecón between Salvatierra and Iglesia). Band members are Henry Korol, Laura Lothian, Alfonso Rojo and Benny Nuñez.

Live music - NuJazz, Saturdays: The duo NuJazz performs at 8 p.m. at La Encantada gallery and wine bar, 1245 Belisario Dominguez between 5 de Mayo and Constitución. Darío Norzagaray plays guitar and James Wilson plays sax, synthesizer and keyboards. Their repertoire includes tasteful and familiar jazz standards, upbeat Latin rhythms, and a number of original compositions written by Nu Jazz members.

Live music - piano, Sundays: KB Morrissey plays Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during brunch at Palermo's Ristorante, on the Malecón between Hidalgo and Morelos Streets. KB has been called the most versatile pianist in La Paz: she covers jazz, ragtime, classical, ballads, and blues. You're sure to hear a favorite or two.

Live music - trovador at La Encantada, Fridays:: You can listen to trova music by Demian Medina at Galería La Encantada, Belisario Dominguez 1245 (between 5 de Mayo and Callejón Constitución) most Fridays, starting about 8:30 p.m.. A trovador, traditionally, is a singer accompanied by guitar.

Music school - public rehearsals, Tuesdays and Fridays: Rehearsals of the Orquesta Juvenil de la Escuela de Música del Estado, 1055 Morelos on the corner of Marcelo Rubio, are free and open to the public at Sala de Conciertos La Paz. Public rehearsals start at 17:00 Fridays and at 18:00 Tuesdays. You may wish to double-check with the school that there’s a rehearsal on a particular evening. Salsa classes, Tuesdays and Fridays: A new series of workshops for beginners begins May 4 at Centro Cultural La Paz, 16 de Septiembre near the corner of Belisario Dominguez. Classes with Agatino Rapisarda are Tuesdays and Fridays, 20:00 to 22:00. For more information, call 612-157-7674.

Tango classes, Saturday: Classes are 18:30 a 19:30 at Café Corazón on Revolución at the corner of Constitución. Cost is 50 pesos.
